HOUSE EXTENSION
BARTHOLOMEW ST, ELEPHANT & CASTLE, LONDON
At Bartholomew Street in Elephant & Castle, London, Wellstudio designed a single-storey rear extension to an existing Grade II Listed Georgian Town House.
The design of the extension is subordinated to & respectful of the Georgian architecture of the existing house. By using London stock brick of similar colour & incorporating a timber entablature in Georgian style, the extension appears as a friendly projection to the rear of the property. Door framing, rainwater downpipes rendered plinth & external lighting are all of colour & materiality which complement the existing property.
As well as providing additional space for the family to be together throughout the day, the extension has been designed with a large roof light which maximises natural light levels & optimises visual connection to the sky.
The extension also incorporates bi-folding doors which provide views out to the back garden with its beautiful trees & planting as well as physical access to a new patio area where the family can sit outside in the summer. With both the roof light & bi-fold doors improved connection to nature is facilitated.
The extension has been designed to support family togetherness through the provision of a new dining & home working space adjacent to a new, enlarged kitchen area.
These new features along with the existing living room & the new patio area create a series of interconnected spaces allowing for all the activities of the family to take place at the same level again supporting family togetherness.
